Every Tuesday, I’ll feature one vinyl from my collection. I’ll share how I found it, give it a rating and explain if it’s worth adding to your collection ( if you have one). Whether it’s a classic, hidden gem or a dud, my goal share my knowledge of jazz fusion and jazz funk, one record at a time.

For my very first “vinyl of the week”, I wanted to highlight the very first vinyl I got, Light Fusion Fantasy. I had first heard about this record via YouTube. Luckily for me, the YouTube algorithm did it’s magic and recommended me a video of the entire record.  I know what the saying is, but you CAN judge a book, or in this case, an record, but its cover.  I’m not sure if anyone else does this, but whenever I watch/ listen to YouTube videos, I go straight to the comments.  I found one comment that said that BlackScreenRecords, had the record for Preorder.  Ever since someone told me that music sounds better on vinyl, I’ve always wanted to start collecting. But I had never actually pulled the trigger.  I never heard of BlackScreenRecords, so I was unsure if it was a scam or not, but for $50, I thought it was worth the risk.  After all, I’ve spent $50 on worse things, like a gym membership that I only went twice.

I went to their website and ordered it. It took about 4 months for it to arrive; to be honest, I had forgotten about it.  Within those 4 months, I hadn’t even purchased a record player, so I went to a friend’s house and played it.  He was right; I can’t explain why, but the music sounded better on  vinyl did sound better than on YouTube.

This album just makes you feel like you’re on the beach, enjoying a nice alcoholic drink ( or in my case, a glass of water.) You can literally hear the ocean in the last track, “Day Dream.” There are a few exceptions:  “Jumping Bean” and “Clip My Heart” sound like they could be in a video game background music. Add  “City Girl” to your list of best Japanese instrumental city pop songs from the 80s.

This is a great record; I highly recommend anyone to listen to this. Light Fusion Fantasy recently was Record Collector’s “Fusion Best 100” list at No. 43. It’s not hard to see why.
